Farm Progress Show Highlights
Political luminaries were abundant in the farm progress show on Wednesday as eight members of congress held a farm bill listening session. Congressman Rodney Davis was one of seven members of the House Ag Committee hearing from a wide range of farmers seeking a variety of farm policy issues, and what did he hear in particular?
Crop Insurance is the number one issues. Crop Insurance, there’s some concern amongst farmers and also those who are in the agribusiness sector about whether or not there’s going to be an attack on it, not just from Republicans and Democrats but also people who just don’t understand this budgeted based safety net that crop insurance has become that saves taxpayers billions of dollars. So that was one major issue.
Also at the Farm Progress Show Wednesday was the Secretary of Agriculture who visited the ADM tent among other locations. Secretary Sonny Perdue said that agriculture trade might be important but the outcome of the NAFTA negotiations could not be guaranteed, a very unsettling thought to farmers. House Agriculture Chairman Mike Conaway said agriculture will have to accept what results from the NAFTA talks.
Well nobody can predict the negotiations so no one could guarantee the outcome, what we do know is what NAFTA does on behalf of trade right now. And the President, he’s committed that he’s going to make good trade deals, better trade deals than we currently have so I got great confidence in the negotiation team at USTR and the White House to get a trade deal done with Canada and Mexico that is good for production agriculture as the current one is or better.
