God Made an FFA Member
Many people have heard the heart-stopping words of Paul Harvey and his iconic tribute to agriculture of “God Made a Farmer.” It still moves those who have heard it many times before. And it has drawn an agricultural industry together that has had many public relations problems in recent days, and criticism that may be unjustified.
But Paul Harvey was also known as the person who told “The Rest of the Story.” And in that tradition, there is a need to carry on, where he may have left of, as we observe this very special week in US agriculture, National FFA Week. In that spirit, let me say….
God looked down on the work that his farmer had achieved, declared it to be good and that he was satisfied. But he said there will be more work to carry on, and so after the 8th hour, God made an FFA member.
God said, I need somebody willing to climb out of bed before sunrise, help his or her Dad with the morning chores, sweat in the summer, chill in the winter, and put in several hours work on the farmstead before the morning school bell rings. And so God made an FFA member.
God said, I need someone quick enough to shower and eat breakfast, kiss Mom goodbye, and be the first in their seat in the school room in the morning, and willing to learn whatever was being taught in first hour class…..before their classmates opened their locker. So God made an FFA member.
God said, I need someone to lead a pledge to the flag, someone to be respectful to teachers and the principal, someone to lead a quiet prayer at the lunch table, and to set a good example for classmates in the way they dress and behave. So God made an FFA member.
God said, I need someone to show others in their community about the importance of agriculture, the need to grow healthy food, to conserve the soil, maintain water purity, plant trees and protect the environment. So God made an FFA member.
God said, I need someone who will seek answers to questions that others have not thought about, someone who will develop new ways of farming that will feed the world as my people expand and grow, and bring together people of diverse backgrounds and interests so problems can be solved. So God made an FFA member.
God said, I need a leader who will tell others why he or she goes to church on Sunday, why there is a need to learn the FFA creed, and know the values that it teaches. I need someone who will be a good community citizen, support elected officials, give blood, and be pure of heart and mind. So God made an FFA member.
God said there will be a day when that person has a family, and when his or her children need to be taught good values, and when those children need a role model for hard work, healthy bodies, and a strong faith. He said I need an FFA member who will pull his blue jacket out of the closet, dust off the shoulders, and put it on his young son or daughter to see how it will fit….
….Because I will need FFA members until the end of time.
