Stu Ellis With WCIA 3 Reporting On Crop Scouting Corn And Soybean Fields
While heat and drought have taken a toll on crop yields, the typical diseases and insects are doing the same. Stu Ellis has this report on problems in corn and soybean fields…
This is crop scouting season for a lot of farmers. They are certainly out in the field looking for things or should be looking for things and that is what we want to find out from Stephanie Porter. She is a sales agronomist for Burrus Seeds and when people are going through a cornfield, what are they going to be seeing?
One of the hottest topics right now is whether to spray fungicide or not, so that is one of the top questions that I am getting.
We have certainly seen a lot of crop dusters around. A lot of fungus in both corn and soybean fields.
Really overall, they have been pretty clean. You think about the disease triangle, humidity, wetness will bring on some disease. But with temperatures, I think they have been really hot, and so that has us concerned. Just recently southern corn leaf rust just blew up. It’s just been spotted for the first time in Illinois yesterday. And I walked into this field and found some suspect leaves. And then of course rootworm beetles are being found.
And that means management for next year.
Yes, and so I don’t think Id be too alarmed about silk feeding at this time with those critters. But I’d definitely want to be on the watch out because those could be building up populations and be feeding on roots next year.
All right, let’s go into a soybean field and continue. What sort of fungal issues are out in soybean fields right now?
In this field we just pulled a leaf here, this is septoria brown spot. We haven’t seen much frogeye, you might see that further south. But definitely with the humidity and the warmer weather some of it is starting to show up.
That’s our report from the farm, I’m Stu Ellis for WCIA3, your local news leader.
