Stu Ellis With WCIA 3 and Corn Crop Tip Back Issues
This is the time of year farmers are checking for yield potential, and some are finding a lot less than expected. Stu Ellis has our report from the farm.
Meet Eric Bruntjen, a member of the Bruntjen Ag Group which farms over 9,000 acres in Central Illinois.
We span out to about Bement, Macon, Illiopolis, and Wapella. Draw a relative circle there.
And when a farming operation stretches that far, it is typically a good way to manage weather risk, and ensure fieldwork can be done somewhere, at any time, and everywhere will catch a shower when it is needed.
I would say that the more northerly, much of the crops we have had gotten a lot more rain, we just did not see down here, they would just slide by us. Macon had seen some pretty decent amount of rain down there, but I’d say around the homestead here, around Warrensburg here its been a little drier than other areas.
But because of excess rain at Macon, a serious problem developed…
About one third of that field down there had to be replanted, and there is not hardly an ear to be found on those new stalks, unfortunately. The early plant stuff, I wasn’t so sure about because it was cold. It was kind of damp at that point. Then it got really damp, and then it got warm, and unfortunately it was too wet and we were getting drowned out everywhere. And then we found out, all of a sudden the rains just shut off, and here came the heat, and we kept missing them, and missing them, and we are losing that top end, it just keeps coming down. Now, fortunately we are starting to get all the rains, but it is a little bit too late. I think we’ll find those ears are tipped back a fair ways, and frankly we’re just not going to see the production. It’s just too late.
That’s our report from the farm. I’m Stu Ellis for WCIA3, your local news leader.
